தவளையாக இருங்கள்

ஜென் துறவி தனது சீடர்களுக்கு வழக்கம் போல் கதைெ செ சொல்லத் தொடங்கினார்.

ஒருமுறை தவளைகளுக்கிடையே போட்டி ஒன்று நடைபெற்றது. உயரமாக இருந்த குன்று ஒன்றின் உச்சியை யார் முதலில் அடைவது என்பதே போட்டி.

அனைத்துத் தவளைகளும் போட்டி ஆரம்பிக்கும்போது உற்சாகமாகத்தான் இருந்தன.

ஆனால் நேரம் செல்லச் செல்ல குன்றின் கால்வாசித் தூரத்தை அடையும்போதே பல தவளைகள் அதற்கு மேல் மேலே ஏற முடியாமல் தங்கள் முயற்சியைக் கைவிட்டன.

அவை கீழே விழுந்தவுடன் சும்மா இருக்கவில்லை. ஏறிக் கொண்டிருந்த தவளைகளைப் பார்த்து. "இதற்குமேல் ஏறுவது யாராலும் முடியாது. உச்சியை அடைவதையெல்லாம் நினைத்துக் கூட பார்க்க முடியாது" என்று சத்தமாகச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டே இருந்தன.

அவை சொல்வதைக் கேட்ட மற்ற தவளைகளும் மனம் சோர்ந்து அடுத்தடுத்து ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாகக் கீழே விழுந்தன.

ஒரே ஒரு தவளை மட்டும் மேலே மேலே ஏறிக் கொண்டே இருந்தது.

அனைத்துத் தவளைகளும் ஒன்றுசேர " உன்னால் மேலே ஏற முடியாது கீழே வந்து விடு" என்று கத்தின.

ஒருவழியாக தான் நினைத்ததை அந்தத் தவனை சாதித்து விட்டது. உயரே சென்று வெற்றி பெற்று விட்டது.

அனைத்துத் தவளைகளுக்கும் ஒரே ஆச்சிரியம். வென்ற தவனை கீழே வந்தவுடன், "உன்னால் மட்டும் எப்படி சாதனை புரிய முடிந்தது?" என்று ஆவலுடன் கேட்டன.

அதற்கு அந்தத் தவளை "நீங்கள் எது பேசினாலும் கொஞ்சம் சத்தமாகப் பேசுங்கள். எனக்குக் காது கொஞ்சம் மந்தம்" என்றது.

குரு கூறிய கதையைக் கேட்ட சீடர்கள் அதன் உட்கருத்தைப் புரிந்து கொண்டனர்.

The Zen monk began to narrate the story to his disciples as usual.

 Once there was a competition between frogs. The competition was to see who would reach the top of the tallest hill first.

 All the frogs were excited when the competition started.

 But as time went on, when they reached about a quarter of the way up the cliff, many frogs could not climb any further and gave up.

 They don't just stay down once they're down. Seeing the climbing frogs. "No one can climb above this. Reaching the top is unimaginable," they kept saying loudly.

 Hearing what they said, the other frogs fell down one after the other, exhausted.

 Only one frog kept climbing up.

 All the frogs gathered together and shouted, "You can't climb up, come down."

 In a way, that ascetic has achieved what he thought. It has gone up and won.

 One wonder for all frogs. When Santha Thavanai came down, "How did you alone manage to accomplish this feat?" They asked eagerly.

 And the frog said, "Whatever you are talking about, speak a little louder. My ears are a little dull."

 The disciples who heard the story told by the Guru understood its gist.
